The Utes were natives of Utah, Colorado, and a small portion of northern New Mexico.

The designation Ute refers to a group of various bands who share a common language. The bands include the following:

  • Muache (in southern Colorado)
  • Capote (also in southern Colorado)
  • Weeminuche (on the border between southern Utah and Colorado)
  • Uncompahgre (Taviwach in central Colorado)
  • White River (Parusanuch in northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado and the Yampa in northern Colorado)
  • Uintah (in Utah)
  • Pahvant (in Utah)
  • Timpanogots (in Utah)
  • Sanpits (in Utah)
  • Moanunts (in Utah)
