Children's School-Year Programs 2008-2009
Offered January to April and September to November



Monday Night at the Library: For Families  Various artists perform every Monday night in the Provo Library Ballroom from 7:30–8:00 p.m. Free family entertainment.

Spanish Story Time: For Families  Every Monday evening 7:00-7:30 p.m. in the Story Telling Circle and every Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Story Room. Stories, songs, and activities in Spanish for families.

Story Time: For ages 3 – 5 years  
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00-10:30 and 11:00-11:30 a.m.
Stories, songs, and finger plays for preschoolers ready to be separated from their parents. Please arrive ten minutes prior to Story Time to register your child. The door to the Story Room will be closed at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. sharp.  Latecomers are welcome to attend Toddler Time.

Toddler Time: For 2-year olds 
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:10-10:30 and 11:10-11:30 a.m.
Two year olds enjoy stories, songs, and finger plays. Parents/caregivers must accompany children to Toddler Time, located in the Story Circle.

Book Babies: Babies 0-12 months
Every Friday from 10:00-10:30 a.m.
Age appropriate stories, songs, finger plays for babies and caregivers. One baby per lap, please.

Mother Goose: Babies 13-24 months
Every Friday 11:00-11:15 and 11:30-11:45 a.m.
Age appropriate songs and finger plays for babies and parents/caregivers.

Library Kids Jr. Ages 5-8
Library Kids Sr. Ages 9-12
Every Thursday 4:15-5:00 p.m.
Must pre-register each preceding Monday by calling 852-6682 (Limited to 40 children in each group). Please bring your library card.

ReaderGuys and ReaderGirls
Every third Thursday from 4:15-5:00 p.m.
A book club for children old enough to read chapter books. Separate sessions will be held for boys and girls.

Mother Daughter Book Club
First Tuesday of every month from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Mothers and daughters discuss a chapter book they have read together. Crafts and light refreshments.  Pre-register at the Children’s Desk or by calling 852-6682. Free.

Emergent Literacy Parent Class: For parents/caregivers
Emergent Literacy is what children need to know about reading and writing before they can actually read or write. Emergent Literacy Classes are offered every 4th Thursday for parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5 years. Classes are free and participants receive free educational materials. Register by calling the Children's Department at 852-6682.


ProvoREADS! 2008
- This year's book: The Tale of Despereaux : being the story of a mouse, a princess, some soup, and a spool of thread by Kate DiCamillo.
ProvoREADS! Kickoff Event: Wednesday, September 10, 7:00 p.m. at Provo City Library.

ESPERANZA RISING  May 1-31
Read a book and fill out a form available at the Provo City Library Children’s Desk to receive free tickets to the BYU Theater Department production of “Esperanza Rising”.  Tickets are available beginning June 1st for the 2:00 pm matinees on June 7, 9, 14, and 16.

SUMMER READING  May 31–July 31
“Catch the Reading Bug” Summer Reading Program for ages 0-12.  You must show your Provo City Library card to register. Summer Reading Kickoff will be May 31st from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm in the Provo City Library Ballroom. Reading logs and t-shirts will be given at registration while supplies last.

CANOPY CAPERS every Tuesday and Thursday in June and July at 12:00-12:30 pm under the canopy on the south side of the building.  Storytelling for families. Bring your lunch, pillows and blankets!

SUMMER STORY TIME every Wednesday in June and July from 9:30-10:00 am and 10:30-11:00 am for preschoolers, toddlers, and their parents/caregivers in the Story Circle.

SUMMER BOOK BABIES every Wednesday in June and July at 11:30 am-12:00 noon.  Age-appropriate stories, songs, and finger plays for babies (0-12 months) and their parents/caregivers in the Story Circle.   

SPANISH STORY TIME every Monday in June and July. 7:00-7:30 pm in the Story Circle for families.

SUMMER CRAFTS & SCIENCE
Each session meets once a week for two weeks:  June 3-12, June 17-26 July 1-10 and July 15-23. Participants cannot register for Science Adventures and Stories and Crafts in the same session. Pre-registration is required, along with a fee of $5.00 per session per participant.   Pre-registration begins May 31st for all three sessions.

Classes (9:30-10:30 am or 11:00-12:00 noon):

Thursdays - Science Adventures (ages 7-12)

FREEDOM FESTIVAL CHILDREN’S PARADE Saturday, June 28th, 10:30 am, meet at Memorial Park, 800 E. Center Street, Provo.  Wear your Summer Reading T-shirt and walk in the parade for six blocks to the Utah County Building. 

R.A.F.T. (Reading Aloud Family Time) In June and July, turn off the TV and read aloud together as a family at least once a week.  Mark your R.A.F.T. time on your Summer Reading Log.

END OF SUMMER READING Bring your completed reading log to the Children’s Desk starting July 28th to receive Summer Reading prizes including tickets to the End of Summer Reading Party and the R.A.F.T party.  The End of Summer Reading Party will be Thursday, July 31st, 8:30-10:00 pm.  Exclusive pool party and popsicles at the Veterans Memorial Pool, 450 West 500 North, Provo, for those who finish the summer reading program.  The R.A.F.T Ronald McDonald Magic Show will be on August 2nd, 10:00-10:30 and 11:00-11:30 am in the Provo City Library Ballroom for those who complete the R.A.F.T. challenge.

ESPERANZA RENACE  Mayo 1-31
Lee 1 libro y llena un formulario en la Biblioteca de Provo del Departamento de Niños, para recibir dos boletos gratis para el teatro de BYU, de la producción: ESPERANZA RENACE.  Los boletos estarán disponibles el 1ro de junio para las matinés de junio 7, 9, 14, y 16 a las 2p.m..

LECTURA DE VERANO  Mayo 31–Julio 31
“Coger el gusano de la lectura” Programa de lectura para Verano para edades 0-12.  Debe presentar su tarjeta de la Biblioteca al registrar. Comenzará la matrícula el 31 de mayo  de 9:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m. en el salón de bailes de la Biblioteca. Se darán diario de lectura al matricular. Debido a la limitación del presupuesto no se darán polos o camisetas este año.

TRAVESURAS BAJO EL TOLDO cada martes y jueves en junio y julio a las 12:00-12:30 p.m. bajo el toldo en el lado Sur del edificio.  Cuentos para familias. Traer almuerzo, almohadas y cobijas!

CUENTOS DURANTE EL VERANO cada miércoles en junio y julio de 9:30-10:00 a.m. y 10:30-11:00 a.m. para pre-escolares, pequeños, y sus padres/guardianes, en el círculo de cuentos.

LIBROS PARA BEBÉS EN VERANO cada miércoles en junio y julio a las 11:30 a.m.-12 mediodía.  Cuentos apropiados para la edad, canciones, y juegos de dedos para bebés (0-12 meses) y sus padres/guardianes, en el círculo de cuentos. 

CUENTOS EN ESPAÑOL  cada lunes en Junio y Julio de 7:00 a 7:30 p.m. en el círculo de cuentos para toda la familia.
   
Artesanías y Ciencias durante el Verano
Cada sesión dura dos semanas cada una, junio 3-12, junio 17-26, julio 1-10 y julio 15-23. Hay que matricular con anticipación y el costo es $5.00 por sesión y por persona.  Solamente se puede matricular por una clase por sesión.  La matricula comienza  mayo 31 para las tres sesiones.

Martes – Cuentos y artesanías (edades 5-12)
Miércoles – Cuentos y artesanías (edades 5-12)
Jueves – Aventuras de ciencias (edades 7-12)
Martes (5:00-6:00 p.m.) –En Español cuentos y artesanías

Desfile de niños en el “Festival Freedom”  Sábado, junio 28, 10:30 a.m., centro de reunión, Memorial Park, 800 E. Center Street, Provo.  Ponerse su camiseta del programa de lectura y camine en el desfile por seis bloques hasta el edificio de Utah County. 

Tiempo para la familia a leer en voz alta En junio y julio, apague la televisión y lean juntos como familia, en voz alta, por lo menos una vez por semana.  Marque el tiempo que leyó como familia, en el diario de lectura. (R.A.F.T.)

Fin del programa de lectura durante el Verano Traiga su diario de lectura al Departamento de Niños comenzando julio 23 para recibir sus premios, inclusive boletos para la fiesta del final del Verano y también la de R.A.F.T.  La Fiesta del Fin del programa de lectura del Verano será jueves, 31 de julio, 8:30-10:00 p.m.  Habrá una fiesta exclusiva en la piscina de “Veterans Memorial Pool”, 450 West 500 North, Provo, y también se darán paletas a todos los que terminen el programa de lectura del verano.  El “R.A.F.T Ronald McDonald show de Magia” será agosto 2, 10:00-10:30 y 11:00-11:30 am en el Ballroom de la Bibliioteca de Provo para los que completan el reto de R.A.F.T. (leer como familia en voz alta).
