Get Graphic: Celebrating Comics and Graphic Novels with Gene Luen Yang
Friday, September 16 & Saturday, September 17

Celebrate all that comics and graphic novels have to offer at the Provo City Library's first-ever graphic novel festival with special guest Gene Luen Yang (author of AMERICAN BORN CHINESE, BOXERS & SAINTS, and more). 

Tickets for all events will be available beginning September 1 at the Children’s and First Floor Reference Desk and online. No tickets are required for events from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Saturday.

Comics in the Classroom with Gene Luen Yang

Skeptical about the value of graphic novels? Author and educator Gene Yang illustrates the value of comics and graphic novels in the classroom.   

September 17: All-ages Festival

Making Comics with Gene Luen Yang
10:00 am, Ballroom

Bestselling graphic novelist Gene Yang will talk about the creative process of making a graphic novel.  Following this keynote, Yang will sign books in the ballroom until 12:00 noon. 

Breakout: The Language of Comics with Jess Smart Smiley
11:00 am, Room 309

What are the parts and pieces of comics? How do they work? Can we use the language of comics to make better stories? Join comics creator Jess Smart Smiley (UPSIDE DOWN: A VAMPIRE TALE) in understanding the language of comics. 

Breakout: The 5 Pillars of Making Comics with Jake Parker
11:45 am, Room 309

Want to make comics books but don't know where to start? Jake Parker (MISSILE MOUSE, SKYHEART, AND ROCKET RACCOON) guides you through his process of creation: what pitfalls to avoid, and what pillars to build on.
