Computers and many mobile devices can be used for reading eBooks simply by installing free software or applications (apps).

Free eBook Apps

Kindle Amazon provides free Kindle apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, Windows PC, Mac, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone 7. The app allows you to make annotations or notes. It also allows synching across multiple devices. New content can be purchased via the Amazon store but not within the app itself. You cannot add old content or content purchased at other vendors unless you own a Kindle eReader.

Nook Barnes and Noble provides free Nook apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, Android tablets and phones, Windows PC, Windows 8, Mac. There are lots of options for fonts, background and text colors. New content can be purchased via the Barnes and Noble website but not within the app itself.

Bluefire Bluefire Reader for Apple and Android devices organizes EPUB and PDF eBooks from public libraries, independent bookstores and national retailers into a single reading environment on mobile devices.

Deseret Bookshelf Bookshelf is a free app for Apple and Android devices used to purchase eBooks published by Deseret Book. The app allows highlighting, bookmarking, searching, and adjusting text. The app also comes with 8 free eBooks.

OverDrive A free app is available for Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, and Windows Phone 7. Ebooks can be search for and downloaded directly from the app. In addition to an OverDrive account, it also requires setting up a free Adobe Digital Editions user name and password.

iBooks A free app created by Apple for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. It reads EPUB and PDF formats. The iBook app has a landscape mode and is one of the only apps which allows books purchases within the app. Your own content can be added if it is in non-DRM EPUB format. iBooks does not allow annotations.

Aldiko A smart looking Android app for use with non-DRM EPUB books. Use it to browse and download from thousands of free classics and modern works and read them right on your Android Smartphones and tablets.

eBook Software

Adobe Digital Editions Adobe Digital Editions is used for acquiring, managing and reading eBooks, digital newspapers, and other digital publications. The software supports PDF and EPUB files. It uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) to allow document sharing between multiple computers and devices with authentication through an Adobe ID.

Storybook Apps
Because of the visual nature of Kids' storybooks, there are very few apps that will read multiple eBooks. Most apps are created for one eBook and charge a small fee (usually $.99 - 8.99). These apps are only available on tablets such as the iPad, Kindle Fire, and Nook Color.
Audiobook Apps

Audible A subsidary of Amazon, Audible.com provides downloadable audiobooks, radio and TV programs, and audio versions of magazines and newspapers. The Audible app is available for nearly every mobile device and smart phone on the market.

OverDrive Only MP3 audiobooks can be checked out and downloaded from the OverDrive app. WMA audiobooks can be transferred to an Apple or Android mobile device by downloading OverDrive Media console to a PC (Macs will not work) and then transferring the WMA audiofile to your device.

Audiobooks The app features an extensive collection of free public domain books narrated by the volunteers at Librivox. Purchasing the premium edition of this app offers a "Plus" add-on of its entire enhanced Librivox collection. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
