The Basement Creative Lab is Provo City Library's new audiovisual production space, opening June 2018.

The Basement Creative Lab is a new production studio space at the Provo City Library available free to Provo residents for sound and video recording. The mission of the Basement Creative Lab is primarily educational; it is a place for residents to learn and practice video and audio production skills. With a host of cameras, lights, microphones, and other equipment available to them, Provo residents can create a variety of media projects in the lab.

In addition to the studio space, the Basement Creative Lab will also offer two more production tools for our patrons: First, we will offer a small collection of equipment that Provo residents can check out to use outside of the Library. Second, we will offer two editing stations with Adobe Creative Cloud and other software for video, audio, and graphics editing.

Basement Creative Lab: Mural Contest

Put your stamp on the Provo City Library! The Provo City Library is hosting a mural contest to complete one mural outside our new Basement Creative Lab (estimated completion: May 2018).

Artists or artist teams will be selected from contest applicants to paint a mural at the entrance of the Basement Creative Lab. The Basement Creative Lab is a new production studio space available free to Provo residents for sound and video recording. With a host of cameras, lights, microphones, and other elements available to them, Provo residents can create a variety of media projects in the Lab.

The selection committee would like the content of the mural to be decided by the artist. The theme of your design can reflect Provo culture and nature, but should also reflect the innovative and creative nature of the Lab.

MURAL SPECIFICATIONS

The mural space is approximately 15 feet wide x 8.5 feet tall, and will be located in the west tunnel connecting the parking garage to the library. Potential artists are encouraged to survey the hallway before submitting a design.

Murals must contain the title, "Basement Creative Lab" somewhere in the artwork.

The wall will be prepped prior to painting; upon selection, the mural artist needs to supply the library with a list of needed materials (to be provided by the library; subject to library approval). The mural should be painted with high-quality acrylics.

ARTIST QUALIFICATIONS AND SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. This contest is open only to Provo residents; artists may submit up to three (3) designs.
  2. All ages are encouraged to apply, though those under the age of 18 must include parental permission.
  3. Submitted designs will be judged according to the following criteria: mural concept and mockup (50%); artistic merit (25%); mural experience (25%).

MURAL AWARDS AND TIMELINE

One design will be selected by the mural committee (though the committee reserves the right to reopen the contest if no acceptable entries are submitted); that artist or artist team will receive a $1,000 cash prize ($500 awarded at time of selection, $500 upon completion of the mural).
